Development Manager
Location: GTA (Hybrid – 2 days onsite Down Town Toronto)
Industry Preference: Financial Services / Insurance (Telecom a plus)
Role Overview
We are seeking a seasoned Development Manager to lead cross-functional development teams and provide strong technical and people leadership. This role bridges business and technology, ensuring high-quality delivery through modern architectures, Agile practices, and effective stakeholder management.
Experience Requirements
- 10+ years of software development experience
- 5+ years in a leadership role (Development Manager, Engineering Manager, Tech Lead, or Solution Lead)
- Experience delivering enterprise-scale applications in Agile or Hybrid Agile environments
- Proven ability to manage teams, vendors, and stakeholders
Core Responsibilities
- Act as the key technical leader and liaison between business stakeholders and technical teams
- Translate complex technical issues into business-friendly language
- Lead, coach, and mentor development teams with empathy and accountability
- Facilitate collaboration across Design, Integration, QA, and Support teams
- Manage vendor relationships and support financial/cost considerations
- Drive technical strategy, planning, and execution
Key Technical Skills
- Architecture knowledge: Server vs. Serverless, Microservices
- API design and integration (Swagger/OpenAPI, security considerations)
- Data fundamentals (DB selection, data flow)
- Capacity planning and development estimation
- Agile / Hybrid Agile delivery, metrics, and release management
- Cloud development (benefits, risks, security, cost management)
- DevOps practices and CI/CD tooling
- Application NFRs: Monitoring, performance, security, unit testing
- Application ownership and support readiness (vulnerabilities, DR, access control)
- Basic understanding of AI-assisted development tools and AI agents
Nice-to-Have
- Hands-on coding background (Java, .NET, Python, or similar)
- Containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Event-driven architectures (Kafka, messaging platforms)
- Legacy modernization experience
- Experience in regulated environments
- Managing offshore or distributed teams
- Relevant certifications (AWS, Azure, GCP, SAFe, PMP)
